Total Time 2 hours 5 minutes
Servings: 10 mugs

Ingredients

  • 6 cups whole milk 1.4 L
  • 2 cups heavy cream 480 ml
  • 1/2 cup unsweetened cocoa powder 50 g
  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar 100 g
  • 1 cup semisweet chocolate chips 170 g
  • 2 tsp vanilla extract
  • 1/4 tsp fine salt
  • Mini marshmallows or whipped cream to serve (optional)

Method

  1. Add the cocoa powder, sugar and salt to the slow cooker. Pour in about 1 cup of the milk and whisk until you have a smooth, lump-free paste.
  2. Whisk in the rest of the milk and the heavy cream until everything is combined.
  3. Stir in the chocolate chips. Cover with the lid and cook on LOW for 2 hours, whisking well halfway through, until the chocolate is fully melted and the hot chocolate is steaming and slightly thickened.
  4. Whisk again until completely smooth and glossy, then stir in the vanilla extract.
  5. Taste and adjust: add a little more sugar if you like it sweeter, or a splash more milk if it is too rich.
  6. Ladle into mugs and top with mini marshmallows or whipped cream. Switch the slow cooker to WARM to keep it ready for refills for up to 2 more hours, stirring now and then.
